With Memorial Day coming up on Monday, May 31, this three-day weekend can be a great time to relax and spend quality time with loved ones. Other busybodies may find this to be the perfect opportunity to clean, organize, and DIY their homes. If you are that busybody looking to take advantage of the long holiday but do not know where to start, here are a few tips to get you motivated.

Reorganizing Your Kitchen

A great way to keep yourself occupied in your free time is to organize your living space. The biggest culprit for many is the kitchen, particularly the cabinets. Luckily, tidying up your pantry or kitchen is a quick, easy, and low-cost DIY project that typically does not involve removing hardware. A trip to your favorite store or a few minutes of shopping online can completely transform your kitchen in a couple of hours. Keep an eye out for waterproof and airtight food grade storage containers to organize your dry food items and they keep perishables fresh and pest resistant.

Repainting Your Rooms

Depending on the condition of the room you would like to repaint, completing this task can take anywhere from 2-4 days, according to This Old House. Keep in mind that you will likely need to remove furniture and hardware, fix cracks or dents, and prepare the walls for a fresh coat. Grab a friend or family member to help speed up the process while spending quality time together, transforming your plain room into something exceptional.

Update Your Old Furniture

The best time to shop for new furniture is during Memorial Day weekend. Furniture stores will have sales for the holiday and are usually rotating their seasonal inventory. According to Houselogic, January to July is the time where furniture prices will be the lowest. You can save from 30% – 60% as manufacturers push to sell the last bit of out-of-season inventory. If you are interested in replacing some of your appliances, furniture, or decorations, now is also the time to shop. You can expect to finish your projects in a few hours to a few days, depending on if you will pick up or deliver your items.

Spending the long weekend catching up on chores may sound tedious and exhausting, but the result will make your hard work worth it. You may find that some tasks like painting, cleaning, organizing, and redecorating can be entertaining with the right company and tools.
